Guide 02

Make dangerous glass visible

The goal is not to decorate a window. The goal is to interrupt the reflection or apparent flight path across the area a bird could try to fly through.

Treat the exterior surface

Exterior treatment is important because it changes what birds see before they reach the glass. Interior objects may not sufficiently break reflections on the outside surface.

Coverage matters

USGS guidance describes dense patterns, including a two-by-two-inch spacing approach. That is why our calculator estimates a full grid instead of a few isolated decals.

Prioritize the riskiest panes

Start where glass reflects vegetation or sky, where windows create a see-through corridor, or where collision evidence already exists. Walk outside and evaluate the reflection from the bird's approach side.

Do not wait for a perfect retrofit.

A temporary exterior pattern that covers the full risk area can be more useful than delaying action while shopping for a permanent architectural solution.

WindowAlert Leaf Medley UV Decals

An exterior UV-decal option, not a guarantee. American Bird Conservancy notes UV patterns may be less visible in low light or shade. Follow dense, visible exterior coverage across the full risky pane.
